The Singalila Top Trek is a beautiful trekking journey through the high ridges and forests of the Singalila National Park, connecting some of the most scenic locations in the Eastern Himalayas including Gorkhey, Phalut, Thakum Valley, and Sandakphu.

This trek offers a perfect blend of dense Himalayan forests, charming mountain villages, alpine valleys, and dramatic ridge walks. The trail gradually climbs to the spectacular viewpoints of Phalut (3,600 m) and Sandakphu (3,636 m), from where trekkers can witness breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga massif, famously known as the Sleeping Buddha formation.

On clear days, trekkers are rewarded with views of some of the world’s highest mountains including Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. The route also passes through pristine forests filled with rhododendrons, bamboo, and oak trees, making it one of the most diverse trekking routes in the region.

The Itinerary Details

Day 1: Darjeeling → Jorethang → Gorkhey

Drive Distance: ~85 km
Elevation: 2,050 m → 2,400 m

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Darjeeling descending through winding mountain roads toward the town of Jorethang in Sikkim. From here the road climbs again through beautiful forests and remote villages before reaching Gorkhey, a picturesque Himalayan village located beside a small mountain stream.

Gorkhey is surrounded by lush green forests and traditional wooden houses, offering a peaceful introduction to the trekking region.

Day 2: Gorkhey → Phalut

Distance: ~14 km
Elevation: 2,400 m → 3,600 m

The trek begins with a steady climb through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests inside Singalila National Park. As the trail gains altitude, the forest gradually opens into alpine landscapes and ridges.

After several hours of ascent, the trail reaches Phalut, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the entire Singalila range. From here trekkers enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range, with clear views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Day 3: Phalut → Thakum Valley

Distance: ~12 km

Today’s trail follows a beautiful section of the Singalila ridge, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan range. The route gradually descends through alpine meadows and forested ridges toward the peaceful campsite of Thakum Valley.

This quiet valley surrounded by forests provides a perfect resting point after the high ridge walk.

Day 4: Thakum Valley → Sandakphu

On clear days, the panorama also includes Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, making Sandakphu one of the most famous viewpoints in the Eastern Himalayas.

Day 5: Sandakphu → Timbure

Day 6: Timbure → Drive to Darjeeling

After breakfast, drive from Timbure back to Darjeeling, passing through scenic mountain roads and traditional Himalayan villages.
