The Darjeeling – Dhotrey – Tonglu Trek is a beautiful short Himalayan trekking experience inside the Singalila National Park, perfect for travelers looking for a peaceful nature escape near Darjeeling. This trek passes through dense rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and magnolia forests, charming Himalayan villages, and scenic ridge trails with stunning views of the Kanchenjunga range.

Starting from the quiet mountain village of Dhotrey, the trail gradually climbs through pristine forests toward Tonglu (3,070 m), a spectacular ridge-top viewpoint on the Singalila Ridge. From here, trekkers enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga massif, famously known as the Sleeping Buddha formation. On clear days, distant views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu can also be seen.

With its peaceful trails, incredible mountain views, and authentic Himalayan village stays, this trek is ideal for beginners, photographers, and nature lovers who want to experience the beauty of the Himalayas in a short time.

The Itinerary Details

Day 1: Darjeeling → Drive to Dhotrey → Trek to Tonglu

Drive Distance: ~18 km
Trek Distance: ~7 km
Elevation: 2,500 m → 3,070 m
Trek Time: 3–4 hrs

The journey begins with a short scenic drive from Darjeeling to Dhotrey, a quiet village located on the edge of Singalila National Park. After entering the park, the trek begins through dense forests filled with rhododendrons and bamboo.

The trail gradually climbs along a peaceful forest path before reaching Tonglu, a beautiful ridge-top village offering panoramic views of the Himalayan range.

Highlight: Sunset views of Kanchenjunga from Tonglu.

Day 2: Tonglu → Tumling → Gairibas → Return to Tonglu

Distance: ~10–12 km
Elevation: 3,070 m → 2,600 m → 3,070 m
Trek Time: 5–6 hrs

After enjoying the beautiful sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range, the trek continues along the Singalila Ridge toward the charming village of Tumling, located on the Nepal side of the border.

The trail then descends through forests toward Gairibas, a beautiful valley inside Singalila National Park. After exploring the area, the trek gradually climbs back to Tonglu for the second night.

Highlight: Ridge walk along the Indo–Nepal border with spectacular mountain views.

Day 3: Tonglu → Dhotrey → Drive to Darjeeling

Distance: ~7 km
Elevation: 3,070 m → 2,500 m
Trek Time: 3–4 hrs

After breakfast and enjoying the final views of the Himalayas, the trek descends through forest trails back to Dhotrey. From here, drive back to Darjeeling, marking the end of this short but memorable Himalayan adventure.
