The adventure begins as the smooth roads end at Maneybhanjang. From here, you leave behind comfort and step into a rugged world of steep climbs, rocky trails, and legendary Land Rover routes that have defined this region for decades. This isn’t just a drive—it’s an off-road experience that tests the terrain and rewards you with constantly shifting landscapes.

As you gain altitude, forests thin out, clouds drift closer, and the horizon slowly begins to open. And then, at Sandakphu, it all comes together.

Standing at 3,636 meters, you’re greeted by one of the most surreal mountain views in the world—the iconic “Sleeping Buddha” formation, where giants like Everest and Kanchenjunga line up across the skyline. It’s raw, vast, and humbling in a way no photograph can truly capture.

But the journey doesn’t stop there.

A short excursion to Thakum Valley adds another layer to the experience—rolling valleys, endless ridgelines, and a sense of isolation that makes you feel far removed from everything else.

The Itinerary Details

Day 1: Darjeeling → Maneybhanjang → Sandakphu

Your journey begins from Darjeeling with a scenic cab ride to Maneybhanjang, the gateway to the Singalila ridge. From here, switch to a rugged Land Rover/4×4 jeep and start your thrilling off-road ascent. The trail winds through dense forests, steep mountain bends, and stretches along the Indo–Nepal border, offering constantly changing landscapes. As you climb higher, the air gets thinner and the views more dramatic, eventually bringing you to Sandakphu (3,636 m). By evening, settle into your stay at Sandakphu, surrounded by clouds and silence. If the skies are clear, witness a magical sunset over the Himalayan range.

Day 2: Sandakphu → Thakum Valley → Maneybhanjang → Darjeeling

Wake up early to catch the iconic sunrise over the “Sleeping Buddha” range—one of the most breathtaking sights in the Eastern Himalayas. After breakfast, head out for a short jeep excursion towards Thakum Valley, a hidden gem known for its vast, rolling landscapes and untouched beauty. Post sightseeing, begin your descent back to Maneybhanjang via jeep, retracing the dramatic mountain route. From there, a cab will take you back to Darjeeling, marking the end of a short yet unforgettable Himalayan escape.
